Do you know what it's like to buy a seat from Ikea? You take home the box…you study the image and already have transported the idea of where that chair will fit into your home. You pour over the instructions and follow it to a T, and the chair is there staring at you. However something is missing. You notice certain dents in the wood that don’t appear in the image of the chair. You notice that the wood has some weathering. It’s like what you constructed just isn’t the image. That you created something not in the box. It isn’t that you are unsatisfied, but you feel like maybe what the image was wasn’t exactly what you wanted to create, and that your imperfect attempt is well unsatisfying. Or maybe your additions give it character, and that it's better than what you set it out to be. The process of building, with complete instructions is a puzzling question of desire.
